Tanglewood Case 5
Case 5 Proposal Tanglewood prides itself on encouragement of diversity in the workplace. All hiring and promotion decisions should be made on the basis of character and quality of work. The ensuing lawsuit brings about a need to analyze Tanglewoodââ¬â¢s selection strategies to ensure these practices are not hindering the promotion of diversity. The Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures (UGESP) requires that all organizations keep records that will allow for calculation and comparison of these statistics. The UGESP also requires that the four-fifthââ¬â¢s rule be calculated in all organizations. If is it shown that ââ¬Å"a selection rate for anyâ⬠¦group is less than four-fifths (4/5) (or eighty percent) of the rate of for the group with the highest rateâ⬠then this will usually be considered to be evidence of adverse impact. After review, the total number of Department manager positions reveals the number of whites employed at this level begins to rise over that of non-white or African Americans. At the next level of Assistant Store Manager, we see a astounding 92. 75% are white, which is nearly 10% higher than the ratios encountered at Associate and Shift Leader positions. Once you reach the highest job level, Store Manager, we see that 69. 56% are white and 30. 44% are non-white, but )% is African American. It appears this company has a ways to go to achieve adequate levels of diversity within the organization as a whole. Achieving Better EEO OutcomesBased upon the available information and prior knowledge of Tanglewoodââ¬â¢s recruiting process and its successes, It is currently advised that Tanglewood should continue on the course of internal recruitment that is currently in place. The prior success speaks for itself and due to the major lack of substantial evidence that suggest this one particular party has been discriminated against would make changing the protocol for promotion an ill-advised decision. Tanglewood has a reputat ion for hiring minorities and establishing a culture that bases its reward system upon the ctions and work record of the people it promotes. Based upon the information in the case it appears that the law firm of Eaglette-Schubert is currently contacting other employees and encouraging them to band together in a law suit of Tanglewood. The attempted contacting of the employee (Mr. Root) by Ms. Gonzalez Tanglewood and his subsequent response to Ms. Gonzalez suggest that Mr. Root has the intentions of creating negative publicity and has been in contact with the law firm with whom are taking his case.In addition his actions based upon the information provided do not represent the level of loyalty and respect for the organization that is required of persons that are wishing to be promoted to higher levels within the organization. This neither information that we are provided does not provide nor give sufficient insight to this case that should/would warrant the need for Tanglewood to cha nge/adjust its current promotion system for employees. Promotion and Career Development ChangesTanglewood is known for its culture and philosophy to provide the best work environment and customer service in the retail industry. Tanglewood also prides itself on allowing employees to grow and develop through its management training programs; however, it is essential for Tanglewoodââ¬â¢s current HR staff and executive management team to be particularly aware of the statistical numbers of its management staff and to continue to recruit and employ a good, diverse group of candidates to be considered for management. In an effort to increase the level of minorities employed in the management program, it its proposed that Tanglewood recruits from primarily minority institutions and groups. Tanglewood can also use external sources that focus and cater to minority employment. Tanglewood can also continue to promote their philosophy, work environment and commitment to excellent customer serv ice. Ultimately, Tanglewoodââ¬â¢s philosophy and culture is to promote excellent customer service and to provide an outstanding work environment.

Obesity and Calories Essay
But you also know that most diets and quick weight-loss plans have about as much substance as a politicianââ¬â¢s campaign pledges. Youââ¬â¢re better off finding several simple things you can do on a daily basis ââ¬â along with following the cardinal rules of eating more vegetables and less fat and getting more physical activity. Together, they should send the scale numbers in the right direction: down. 1. Once a week, indulge in a high-calorie-tasting, but low-calorie, treat. This should help keep you from feeling deprived and binging on higher-calorie foods. For instance: â⬠¢ Lobster. Just 83 calories in 3 ounces. â⬠¢ Shrimp. Just 60 calories in 12 large. â⬠¢ Smoked salmon. Just 66 calories in two ounces. Sprinkle with capers for an even more elegant treat. â⬠¢ Whipped cream. Just 8 calories in one tablespoon. Drop a dollop over a bowl of fresh fruit for dessert. 2. Treat high-calorie foods as jewels in the crown. Make a spoonful of ice cream the jewel and a bowl of fruit the crown. Cut down on the chips by pairing each bite with lots of chunky, filling fresh salsa, suggests Jeff Novick, director of nutrition at the Pritikin Longevity Center & Spa in Florida. Balance a little cheese with a lot of salad. 3. After breakfast, make water your primary drink. At breakfast, go ahead and drink orange juice. But throughout the rest of the day, focus on water instead of juice or soda. The average American consumes an extra 245 calories a day from soft drinks. Thatââ¬â¢s nearly 90,000 calories a year ââ¬â or 25 pounds! And research shows that despite the calories, sugary drinks donââ¬â¢t trigger a sense of fullness the way that food does. . Carry a palm-size notebook everywhere you go for one week. Write down every single morsel that enters your lips ââ¬â even water. Studies have found that people who maintain food diaries wind up eating about 15 percent less food than those who donââ¬â¢t. Plus: 8 Kitchen Cabinet Makeovers for Weight Loss 5. Buy a pedomete r, clip it to your belt, and aim for an extra 1,000 steps a day. On average, sedentary people take only 2,000 to 3,000 steps a day. Adding 2,000 steps will help you maintain your current weight and stop gaining weight; adding more than that will help you lose weight. 6. Add 10 percent to the amount of daily calories you think youââ¬â¢re eating, then adjust your eating habits accordingly. If you think youââ¬â¢re consuming 1,700 calories a day and donââ¬â¢t understand why youââ¬â¢re not losing weight, add another 170 calories to your guesstimate. Chances are, the new number is more accurate. 7. Eat five or six small meals or snacks a day instead of three large meals. A 1999 South African study found that when men ate parts of their morning meal at intervals over five hours, they consumed almost 30 percent fewer calories at lunch than when they ate a single breakfast. Other studies show that even if you eat the same number of calories distributed this way, your body releases less insulin, which keeps blood sugar steady and helps control hunger. 8. Walk for 45 minutes a day. The reason weââ¬â¢re suggesting 45 minutes instead of the typical 30 is that a Duke University study found that while 30 minutes of daily walking is enough to prevent weight gain in most relatively sedentary people, exercise beyond 30 minutes results in weight and fat loss. Burning an additional 300 calories a day with three miles of brisk walking (45 minutes should do it) could help you lose 30 pounds in a year without even changing how much youââ¬â¢re eating. 9. Find an online weight-loss buddy. A University of Vermont study found that online weight-loss buddies help you keep the weight off. The researchers followed volunteers for 18 months. Those assigned to an Internet-based weight maintenance program sustained their weight loss better than those who met face-to-face in a support group. Plus: 15 Foods You Should Never Buy Again 0. Bring the color blue into your life more often. Thereââ¬â¢s a good reason you wonââ¬â¢t see many fast-food restaurants decorated in blue: Believe it or not, the color blue functions as an appetite suppressant. So serve up dinner on blue plates, dress in blue while you eat, and cover your table with a blue tablecloth. Conversely, avoid red, yellow, and orange in your dining areas. Studies find they encourage eating . 11. Clean your closet of the ââ¬Å"fatâ⬠clothes. Once youââ¬â¢ve reached your target weight, throw out or give away every piece of clothing that doesnââ¬â¢t fit. The idea of having to buy a whole new wardrobe if you gain the weight back will serve as a strong incentive to maintain your new figure. 12. Downsize your dinner plates. Studies find that the less food put in front of you, the less food youââ¬â¢ll eat. Conversely, the more food in front of you, the more youââ¬â¢ll eat ââ¬â regardless of how hungry you are. So instead of using regular dinner plates that range these days from 10-14 inches (making them look forlornly empty if theyââ¬â¢re not heaped with food), serve your main course on salad plates (about 7-9 inches wide).

Obstructions to culturally competent medical care Research Paper
Obstructions to culturally competent medical care - Research Paper Example According to the study conducted the discrepancy in the existing health system and admittance to medical care facilities that subsist amid the minority sections of the population of United States has been accepted as a familiar problem by the government since the early 1970s. Due to its effect, there has been a lot of research done on this issue and it has been documented in reports that the American minority section is suffering from poorer health due to lack of cultural competency in medical care. For a majority of the ethnic groups, the debate on the cultural equation of health care cannot take place without giving ample consideration to the variety of ways in which traditions crisscross with matters of poverty and impartiality, access to health care, individual and community discrimination, and a deficit of cultural proficiency on the part of health care providers. Even though some system-wide obstructions to a proper health care system are well thought-out elsewhere, they also r equire extraordinary thoughtfulness with the majority of the ethnic minority sections because the concerns are elevated by the cultural dynamics. The urgent requirement to reflect on the cultural and traditional factors that impediment the medical care of the minorities has been identified by many countries around the globe. Yet most of these governments are not at all close to solving the problem of cultural incompetency of medical providers. , (Shortell, Hull, 1996) The main reason is that most of the time, a patientââ¬â¢s tradition is habitually perceived as a setback, which ultimately creates a barricade to providing effective medical care. Marginalization of traditions and culture of the minority groups of the ethnic patients diminishes the accountability of the medical care providers. The medical care could be more efficient in dealing with this; the problem should be seen in a different light and screening the obstructions as ensuing not from the cultures of the minority g roups but from the values that exist in the medical community, inadequate proficient training, and other barriers. Some experts of the field also argue that the medical community has been highly unsuccessful in this case, and has not been able to identify their own responsibilities of effectively attending to providing competent service to their ethic and other minority clients and patients, (Gordon, 1995). 2. OBSTRUCTIONS TO CULTURALLY COMPETENT MEDICAL CARE This section of the paper identifies some known barriers amid the patients and the medical care providers that have made a high influence on the quality of the service provided and at the same time supplement to added racial and ethnic disparities in the medical health care system. 1. Lack of Diversity amongst the Medical Care Providers and Workforce Experts on the issue concerning lack of a culturally competent medical care have often stated their worries about the lack of a diverse leadership potential in the health care sect or. The minority population holds up an effectual 29% of the total population percentage of United States but fare poorer in the employment sector. Not more than 3 percent of the minority communities hold positions in medical school faculties; approximately only 12 percent hold positions in a community health school, and 18 percent in all metropolis and province health executives. Moreover, 98 percent of the senior executives in health care management belong to the white community. These figures exercise major concern because if there would have been a higher percentage of minority health care professional in the system, they would be able to identify, recognize and take into account the socio-cultural factors that adversely affect the medical acre treatment being given to the minorities and could have better organized health care delivery decisions to meet the requirements of minority populations, (Reese, Ahern, Nair, et al., 1999). 2. Poor and inefficient medical care systems for Ethnically Diverse Patients Many experts have pointed out on the lack of proper medical care syst

Sea Water Intrusion in Estuaries Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Sea Water Intrusion in Estuaries - Article Example The results obtained using the model includes the measure of water level, discharge and salinity level. These have shown good agreement with the observed results. Also, a direct relationship between longitudinal salt dispersion with flood-ebb loop length and tidal efficiency is also confirmed in this study (Nguyen et al, 2008b). The prediction of the salinity distribution in the complex situations like multi-channel estuaries like Mekong delta have also been reported in the literature (Nguyen and Savenije, 2006). Mekong delta is unique in its character. It has large number of branches and transports huge quantity of water (2000 cu.m per second) even during summer. The prediction model is framed on the principle that the multi-channel estuarine system would function as single entity and the paired branches could be appropriately combined to one. The results obtained from the analysis show that steady state models could predict the salinity levels very well. They could also explain the equilibrium conditions established in the estuaries during variable flow period especially during the dry seasons. Also, authors have computed the system response time for Mekong also. The data used in the paper was collected during the period 1991 to 1998. As Mekong delta is a very active morphologically, it's topography too is undergoing continuous change due to the transport of sediments through the river. Hence, the model would require continuous improvement by incorporating the recent topographical details. Further, the model also has parameters like mean estuary depth and river discharge that have high degree of uncertainty (Nguyen and Savenije, 2006). Determination of fresh water discharge is essential for quantification of salinity distribution. In the case of very low flows the salinity distribution is observed to be maximum. But the low fresh water flows coupled with high tidal flows make the accurate estimate of fresh water discharges very difficult. And in the case of Mekong delta, the multi channel characteristics make the accurate direct determination of discharge computation very cumbersome. A reliable model has been proposed to estimate the river discharge under the above situations (Nguyen et al, 2008a). The principle applied in this process is the reverse calculation, from the known values of salinity distribution the authors have developed equations to determine the river discharge. In this connection, two separate approaches have been attempted for different clusters of rivers in this basin. In the first approach, based on the information on the salinity distribution and estuarine shape of each branch the discharge i n the individual branches is computed. And in the other approach, from the combined shape of estuarine branches and the salinity distribution, the combined discharge is estimated. These analytical models could be used to compute the river discharges in multi channel estuarine regions by collecting the salinity distributions (Nguyen et al, 2008a). Mithodology and planning Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Mithodology and planning - Essay Example Course ideas The lesson is part of a unit or course that I have taught back in my school. So the idea of the course is not a new thing for me. While designing this course, I focused on the studentsââ¬â¢ needs in the first place as is explained by Graves (2000). I am going to teach this course to young intermediate female students who are studying English as a compulsory subject among other Arabic subjects in the school. Therefore, on the whole goal of the course is to improve the studentsââ¬â¢ four language skills: speaking, listening, reading and writing through a common and lovable topic such as food. Beliefs inherent in planning Since the type of the course is integrated course of the four skills, in each lesson I tried to focus on a specific skill. In this lesson, I tried to concentrate more on the writing skill by teaching students the sequence of words that will make their writing more coherent. Also, I have not just focussed on language but also tried to introduce the culture of English language through my lesson as it is presented by Cruz, Bonissone and Baff (1995). They encouraged teaching the culture of the second language and explained that it will make the abstract form of the language more meaningful. Thus, through this lesson I introduced examples of common food in English culture such as peanut butter sandwiches and chocolate muffins. Moreover, there is a connection between L1 and L2, due to the nature of the human brain. Students tend to translate what they learn in L2 to their L1 (Littlewood & Yu, 2009). Therefore, I tried to bring their previous knowledge about food in their L1 and to use the English language to talk about it. Also, when choosing the activities for my lesson I considered my studentsââ¬â¢ different learning styles as it is cited in Nunan, (1999).Furthermore, I used different learning strategies, through various activities. The reason for this variation is to keep the students interested all the time and to attract their attention. Also, my role as a teacher through these activities was to direct them with simple and direct instructions and to observe their work. However, I did not correct their errors in a direct way and tried to accept their answers as such in order to encourage them and give them the freedom to participate more. On the other hand, the role of the students was productive and they had a great part in speaking, reading and writing. This facilitates my role as a teacher because I had to observe and direct only. Context The topic of my course and lesson is about food, which is a common topic. Therefore, it can be adapted in any context. H owever, there are some adaptations that could be made according to the context in which this course will be given. For example, kinds of food, types of activities and materials. Also, in my context I have to pay attention on my studentsââ¬â¢ religious and cultural backgrounds when choosing the topic of my texts. For example, I cannot teach the Muslim students texts that talk about how to prepare a pork sandwich, because eating the pigââ¬â¢s meat is forbidden in Islam. Nevertheless, the number of the students in my real context is vast and there is always lack of materials. However, the most significant element

Mergers and acquisitions-B Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Mergers and acquisitions-B - Coursework Example Are any Sell-Offs Likely? 10 7. Risk ââ¬â Given that the Majority of Takeovers Destroy Shareholder Value, What Are the Major Risks? 11 Conclusion 13 References 14 Introduction Evidences reveal that M&As can be quite risky to lead the pathway of the acquiring companyââ¬â¢s destruction and on the other hand, be highly beneficial to assist the company in the attainment of its long-term objectives. Despite the immense risk, companies opt for M&As in order to gain the benefits of operational leap, integration, larger customer base, channels and higher competencies (Galpin & Herdon, 2007). One of the most risky acquisitions in the recent past can be identified as the acquisition of National Westminster Bank (NatWest) by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) in the year 2000. It is recorded as one of the most daring acquisitions, due to the fact that during the period of acquiring NatWest, RBS was recognised to be smaller than the target company. It took a great effort from RBSââ¬â¢s e nd to complete the deal and rewarded it the reputation of one of the leaders in the British Banking Industry (Larsen, 2007). With this concern, the paper will examine the entire process of acquisition considering the various aspects, such as strategic fitness of NatWest, regulatory factors influencing the process, justification of the valuation of acquisition, defence tactics applied, implementation of integration and risks involved in the acquisition. 1. Strategy ââ¬â How Does The Target Company Appear To Fit into the Acquirerââ¬â¢s Long-Term Strategy? According to the experts, strategic fitness of the target company in M&A is considered to be one of the most significant aspects while determining the plan. Because, underneath every M&A the observed motive of the acquiring company or the merging companies are to increase the value of the two companies together which would be more than the sum of the total values of both the companies. Strategic fit of the target company, thus , holds a significant position to increase the overall value of the acquirer (Lee & Pennings, 1996). The strategic fit of the acquisition and the target company can be analysed in depth considering the fact that M&As are often termed as a past of the strategic objective of the acquirer to attain growth and higher competency (Edinburgh Business School, 2008). The objective can be well identified in the acquisition of NatWest by RBS. It was a horizontal acquisition, which means that the target company and the acquirer belonged to similar product line and also to a similar cultural background. This reduced the constraints in terms of cultural divergences. The prime objective of the acquisition depended on the fact that RBS was facing major difficulties in terms of shrinking stock prices to approx 32% and required growth. Similarly, with an increased competition and reducing market share led by the falling stock price and increased operational costs; NatWest opted to go for an M&A in or der to survive in the industry (Mahar & Polson, 2003). Being three times larger than RBS, NatWest was able to reward a higher market share and increased balance sheet value quite instantly after the acquisition with a paid bid of ?21 billion (NatWest, n.d). Subsequently, the stock price of RBS increased rapidly over the next two years (Mahar & Polson, 2003). Therefore, it is quite apparent that the acquisition proved to be a successful one in the short-term as well as in the long-term perspective. The market

An empirical study on how international projects differ from standard Research Paper
An empirical study on how international projects differ from standard projects - Research Paper Example Notwithstanding the popularity of the said issues, studies show that they have met a number of disasters. In fact, only a small percentage of the same has relatively succeeded. It, is however, also argued that there are still a number of failures and problems that are associated with project management (Perkins 1999). In this regard, policy analysts have recommended the application of radical change in project management in the hopes of ensuring the success of international project (Cleveland and Ireland 2007). Moreover, it was also discovered that there is also a need to incorporate modern techniques that are deemed appropriate international projects (Zajda 2005; Grisham 2009). Lientz and Rea (2003) mention the following factors as those which contribute to the complexity of international projects which must be dealt with to guarantee its success: ââ¬Å"(1) cultural and social differences existing amongst the members of the firms, (2) cultural and social differences amongst countri es and within countries, (3) languages and dialect variations, (4) religious practices, (5) legal, regulatory and reporting requirements, (6) technology and level differences in different areas, (7) infrastructure variations, and lastly, (8) time zone differences. Undoubtedly, the presence of the said factors contributes to the existence of the differences between the international projects and the standard projects (Cleveland and Ireland 2007). ... Why are they more complex, taking attributes such as organizations, systems and technologies, society, company culture, self-interest, regulation, costs, risks, etc. into consideration? In relation to this, the research also aims to either validate or falsify this hypothesis: International projects differ from standard projects; with the former being more complex than the latter due to attributes such as organizations, systems and technologies, society, company culture, self-interest, regulation, costs, risks, etc. Relevance of the Topic As reflected by the section dealing with the research question the hypothesis related to this, this research focuses on the examination of international projects and how they differ from standard ones, taking various factors such as organizations, systems and technologies, society, institutional culture, self-interest, regulation, costs, risks, etc. into consideration. Thus, the relevance of the same is underscored because of its capacity to help the researcher reflect upon the concepts and notions present throughout the entire paper. Aside from the same, the findings of this research shall also help the researcher enhance his professional experience. The importance of the study also lies on the fact that it helps the success of the international projects. Apparently, research points out that due to the complexity of the international projects as well as the failure of project managers to properly respond to this has contributed to its partial success. In this regard, this research offers a perspective on how international projects differ from standard projects due to the complexity of its environment. Hence, international project managers shall be presented with solutions that

Housing associations are now encouraging the housing corporation to use the modern ways of construction known as modern methods of construction when building new developments. This policy is a direct result of the Governments response to a number of drivers that have resulted in what it perceives to be a crisis in housing supply. In areas of growth, house construction in the private sector has tended to focus on the production of traditional houses either semi-separate family homes or larger separate executive homes. These private sector dwellings are beyond the reach of most first time buyers, particularly key-workers in comparatively low-paid jobs in the public sector. The Government is looking to housing associations to give dwellings for those who cant afford to buy the house. The Housing Corporation is the key agency regulating The Housing Corporation is the key agency regulating delivery of housing in the social housing sector. They assist with delivery of policy via grants awarded through the Approved Development Programme (ADP). A proportion of the ADP has been ring-fenced (The Challenge Fund) for the delivery of new homes quickly and cost effectively, in areas of high demand as well as stimulating a step change in supply by encouraging innovative forms of construction. In the face of the support from political and regulatory authorities to make greater use of modern methods, lots of stakeholders are still unsure about modern methods of construction for some of reasons. In the case of housing associations there is doubt about whether or not modern methods are able to deliver energy efficient homes at good reasonable prices. This pamphlet aims to demonstrate that homes that cross the requirements of building regulations in sense of their material efficiency can be built cost-effectively. SIPS Structural insulated composite panels are one of the most satisfying technologies in the construction industry. Started in the years of 1940s when the new sandwich design concept was generated, where there were two wooden materials and a different element between them generating maximum strength to the structure. Design As mentioned earlier, the SIP has an insulated structure between two wooden boards. This most commonly used materials are expanded polystyrene (EPS), extruded polystyrene (XPS) or rigid polyurethane foam. Figure : STRUCTURAL INSULATED COMPOSITE PANELS Figure : STRUCTURAL INSULATED PANELSOther materials can also be used for example, steel, aluminium, stainless steel, fibre-reinforced plastic, and magnesium oxide.http://www.wbs-ltd.co.uk/images/photos/newbuild_mmc_sips1a.gif Advantages the structure is more Tougher and stronger due to the sandwich pattern of the material More insulated than any of the materials Less operating cost and can be used almost everywhere for eg. Roof, floor, walls etc. Drawbacks The manufacturing and the production can take some time Expensive manufacturing cost Have to prevent the composite from moister and keep it ventilated The material creeps over time Figure : VOLUMETRIC CONSTRUCTIONVOLUMETRIC CONSTRUCTIONhttp://www.scrapbookscrapbook.com/DAC-ART/images/hoodsinside.jpg The volumetric construction is also, known as the modular construction. This kind of construction is mostly used at places where the employer cannot afford waste time and material for e.g. a busy road, a hospital etc. Design The construction components are manufactured and processed and are stacked onto prepared foundations to form dwelling. The materials used to make the components include light gauge steel frame, timber frame, concrete and composites. Advantages Saves time and also the labour cost. Can reduce the waste significantly generated during construction and also comparatively the least amongst other construction methods It is the most efficient when using identical units as it is the same common production line used. Improved quality compared to the other construction methods Disadvantages Setting up a manufacturing and production line could be a major concern issue when considering cost Transporting could be expensive depending upon the size of components Also, installations and other factors would affect the construction workers if the components are heavy or complex structure and have to be perfectly installed STEEL FRAME CONSTRUCTION The steel frame construction is usually used for constructing bigger structures like building, sky scrapers etc due to its durability and toughness. The SFC is one of the most efficient construction methods which use steel beams, T shaped and I shaped beams as to resist the stresses. Design Figure : STEEL FRAME CONSTRUCTIONOakridge, a development of 299 dwellings for Sentinel Housing Group, utilised light gauge steel frame panellised construction for the first two phases. The homes, constructed from steel frames manufactured by Ayrshire Steel Framing, share standardised layouts visual variety was achieved externally by incorporating a variety of physical features (such as bays, dormers and balconies) along with a variety of finishes (different coloured renders, brick and timber cladding). Dormers and balconies were also prefabricated in glass reinforced plastic (GRP).http://www.airport-technology.com/projects/raleighdurham/images/7-frame-construction.jpg 2. Advantages of Steel Frame Construction: They can build very high and large They are light weight and strong They are easy to fix or assemble They are accurate and predictable 3. Disadvantages of Steel Frame Construction: Steel is an expensive material Frames are unstable These types of frames needs fire protection They needs separate skin TIMBER FRAME CONSTRUCTION Figure : TIMBER FRAME CONSTRUCTIONTimber frame is a modern method of construction that offers an important high-quality solution to the many housing and construction challenges facing the UK.As one of the leading modern methods of construction, timber frame has grown consistently year on year. Its regarded as a means of achieving good quality, reducing time spent on-site, increasing safety and overcoming skills shortages in the industry, and will play a very important role in the formation of homes in sustainable communities by 2016.http://www.lizmale.co.uk/uploadFiles/mciFiles/Timber_frame_construction1.jpg Design Wood is the only renewable commercial building material and as a way of construction is effectively carbon neutral. When you use timber frame youre actively helping to reduce the belongings of global warming. Further improved by its low embodied energy and excellent insulation properties, it means happy customers with lower heating bills and a good future for the planet. Advantages of Timber Frame Construction In timber frame construction needs small amount of labour. It can be seen that the benefit in terms of time saving on site manifests itself as a saving in construction risk. Timber frame construction is environment friendly but the environmental benefits of timber frame construction are reduced when timber is imported from sources outside non local and requiring substantial fuel consumption in transportation. Disadvantages of Timber Frame Construction Apparently problems with timber frame construction in the housing industry from each end users and local establishment would include a perceived huge risk of fire, problem of sound lessening in a timber structure and the impact such a structure might have on the security of the end user. Basingstoke timber frame construction site fire Figure : CONSTRUCTION FIRE Timber frames are designed and manufactured to tight tolerance and require correct setting and other adjacent construction such as chimneys, rising walls and block construction. As a result, these works need to be set out with a good degree of accuracy. Panels should be stacked on a flat surface so that warping or buckling does not happen. Proper on-site practices and skill of deliveries can address this matter. Where housing is proposed in areas at threat of flooding, the planned construction methods undertaken need to be reviewed in order to measure the possible risks or implications should flooding occur. BRICK and MORTAR CONSTRUCTION Figure : BRICK AND MORTAR CONSTRUCTIONBrick is a timeless, classic building material. The Chinese, and Egyptians understood the value of this simplest of rectangular solids over three thousand years ago. Brick structures still stand that were already ancient at the time of Christ. Invented in antiquity, brick remains the one exterior building material with a human scale, rich variegated colours, and flexibility of use. Modern man has crafted building materials from concrete, plastic, glass and steel, but none approach this unique elementary product. http://www.chemexfranchises.co.uk/anglesey/images/construction.jpg Design The brick making process is unchanged from primitive times in its necessary elements. A modern brick plant carries out the same functions that a Babylonian craftsman once performed. That craftsman mortar and sand, mixed the two with water to form a flexible clay mass or clot, formed the clot in a wooden mould, dried the green, unfired brick in the sun, baked it to nearly 2000 degrees, and cooled the now permanent brick, which then went to the mason to be laid in mortar to become part of a temple, Great Wall, or simple home. Figure : BRICK AND MORTAR CONSTRUCTIONAdvantages of Brick and Mortar constructionhttp://www.bandwbuilders.co.uk/ImageHandler.ashx?UploadedFile=trueimage=~/App_Data/UserImages/Image/11125%20100910%20001.jpg The bricks walls protects the houses from noises thats comes from outside. Bricks are beautiful when we go to the residential area we can compare the beauty of brick structure to the other structural work like steel, wood etc. Brick structures are easy to maintain and there is nearly no cost to maintain the exterior of an all brick home. Bricks will not burn and in those disastrous situations where a fire does occur it will certainly not fuel the situation. Disadvantages of Brick and MORTOAR CONSTRUCTION The one main disadvantage of bricks and mortar is the high cost of both material and labour. Bricks and mortar construction is much sturdier than wooden homes because of the thickness, hardness and weight of the materials used to build the home bricks and mortar construction is very old traditional construction. ANALYSES AND EVALUATION For the particular construction, the author supposes that the steel frame construction would be the best possible way to build the structure. As the main concern is time efficiency it would be quicker and easier to install the steel frame structure and to complete the work on time. Talking in terms of cost efficiency and reliability, in the steel frame structure has to be compromised in one of the two factors. The demand of this kind of structure is to be tough and reliable and therefore have to spend some money on the manufacturing of the steel frames and also keeping the quality into consideration. The manufacturing cost and the transportation cost would be the only concern issues for the company where as the labour cost would be comparatively less. As the steel frames could be easily assembled and fixed. Architecting on the building would be easier and also it would give a freedom to the architect to design his particular construction as the steel frame could be manufactures in almost any possible way. Method Cost Time efficiency Structural reliability Environmental friendly sustainability SIP Expensive manufacturing cost and nominal labour cost Moderate Good Moderate Best Volumetric construction Expensive manufacturing and labour cost Good Moderate Moderate Less Timber frame construction Nominal cost Less Moderate Less Good Brick and Mortar construction Least amongst all the methods Least Good Less Less Steel Frame Construction Expensive manufacturing cost but cheap labour cost Best Best Best Good SCHEDULING AND PROCEDURES Designing The plan starts by taking the structure into consideration. Keeping the limitations, constrains and the difficulties in mind. The Architecting Part takes place after the cost estimation and the legislations have been considered. The designing process is a time taking process as it helps in knowing all most everything which is to be used in the construction and the quantity of materials which have to be ordered or manufactured. Foundation The execution starts by evacuating the area and excavating to make a foundation for the building. The foundations build is made up of cement, which is a common process for all the construction. During the initial construction, the skeleton of the structure is build by the steel frame construction method. The steel frame construction helps in giving the toughness to the structure and also, the freedom to building almost any kind of structural shape. The concern issues for steel frame structure are as follows: Time delay in manufacturing and transportation Waste parts could affect the expected budget Construction The method suitable with the steel frame structure is the SIPS. The Structural insulated panels can be used in making roofs, floor and also the walls. The reliability and the strength of the combination of the structures would improve the life and the toughness of the building. Concern issues for this kind of construction method are: Weather: it could be a serious issue and could delay the work plan, therefore the construction plan has to be well organised and executed. Labour cost : these kind of construction methods have nominal labour cost but since it is a combination of two types of construction methods, the labour demand could be higher Lastly, legislation: the legislations are the most important factor of concern for the employer and as well as the management. Finishing The finishing consists of the final construction steps like greasing, oiling, painting etc. REFERENCE Figure 1: modern method of construction ; http://www.tommypopeconstruction.com/Building-Construction.htm Date: 3rd may 2011 time: 4:00pm Figure 2 : Modern building; Shift Housing by AquiliAlberg Date: 3rd may 2011 time: 4:20 Figure 3 : http://www.thermalconstruction.co.uk/about-us-1 DATE: 9th may 2011 11:41 Figure 4 : SIPS http://www.wbs-ltd.co.uk/newbuild_mmc_sips.htm Date: 9th may 2011 12:00 Figure 5: VOLUMETRIC CONSTRUCTION http://www.scrapbookscrapbook.com/DAC-ART/dac-artblocks.html Date: 10th may 2011 1:12pm Figure 6: STEEL FRAME CONSTRUCTION http://www.airport-technology.com/projects/raleighdurham/raleighdurham7.html Date: 10th may 2011 1:30pm Figure 7 : TIMBER FRAME CONSTRUCTION http://www.lizmale.co.uk/clients-case-studies/uktfa Date: 10th may 2011 1:35pm Figure 8: CONSTRUCTION FIRE http://faast.co.uk/2010/09/15/basingstoke-timber-frame-frame-fire-prompts-construction-fire-safety-warnings/ Date: 11th may 2011 2:00pm Figure 9 : BRICK AND MORTAR CONSTRUCTION http://www.chemexfranchises.co.uk/anglesey/construction.html Date: 11th may 2011 2:10pm Figure : BRICK AND MORTAR CONSTRUCTION http://www.bandwbuilders.co.uk/blog Date: 11th may 2011 4:00

Dead Poets Society And Dangerous Minds Comparison Film Studies Essay
Dead Poets Society And Dangerous Minds Comparison Film Studies Essay The soundtrack of Dead Poets Society is a synchronous one of bagpipes being played during the procession, synchronous is a term used to describe a sound caused by some event on screen and which matches the action. This particular soundtrack relates particularly well to the visual track mainly because of it being synchronous, but also because bagpipes represent tradition a big theme throughout the film. I agree with this choice made by the director for using bagpipes as the soundtrack as it fits in nicely with the conformity being placed on the students by the school. On the other hand, the soundtrack used in Dangerous Minds is non synchronous, (sound which is recorded separately from the visuals then added later). The soundtrack is also a sound bridge the music continues through shots adding to the continuity. The use of the song: Gangsters Paradise, relates to the theme of gangs within the area and life on the streets. I also agree with the choice made by the director the song reflects themes which appear later in the film. A matched cut type of editing is used in the opening sequences of Dead Poets Society; this is where a familiar relationship between the shots may make the changes seem smooth. This type of editing is used to show continuity and no change in time between shots giving the viewer all the small details. This editing is effective and continues as the characters enter a new scene, the chapel. Again, Dangerous Minds adopts a different approach by using a jump cut editing technique this is an abrupt switch from one scene to another indicating discontinuity. I believe this is used to show the extent of disrespect for public property as seen by destruction and vandalism. This editing also shows sections of interactions between characters which gives the viewer an idea of who they really are. Now, on to the choices relating to colour and lighting starting with Dead Poets Society. A lot of light is used in its opening sequences, all the characters faces are sufficiently lit up. Light is also a form of iconography with the Light of Knowledge in the form of a candle which also provides light to the large chapel. Lighting can manipulate a viewers attitude towards a character, this happened to me when light was shining up from beneath Mr Nolans face, giving the impression of a stern character and a severe enforcer of rules. The colours are also light; oranges, yellows and red which represent a warm environment (for the time being). Dangerous Minds shows a different aspect of how colour can be used effectively in an opening sequence. The first thing the viewer notices is that the visuals are in black and white only this creates an interest in the viewer as it is unexpected and they therefore pay more attention. The misà ¨-en-scà ¨ne is dark regardless of the black and white colour and there are shadows moving through some of the shots hinting at mysterious lifestyles. The colour changes from black and white to colour as the characters move into the higher class areas on their way to school, this shows the significance school has and still will have on them. The establishing shot in Dead Poets Society is of a wall painted with old pupils, the American flag and the English flag, another example of an old school remembering its roots and traditions a prominent theme throughout the rest of the film. There is a close up two-shot capturing the emotions of the two boys having their photo taken. A close up shot of bagpipes being set up reinforces the theme of tradition and tracking as the procession enters the chapel draws the viewer into the film. The establishing shot of Dangerous Minds is of a neglected building with graffiti on it saying, We love you baby! the camera then pans across the room showing even more graffiti. The camera angles focus more on the surrounding of the characters rather than the characters themselves, emphasising the huge impact of where people come from has on their lives. The first theme introduced in Dead Poets Society is that of tradition. This is seen from the establishing shot of the wall showing the history of the school; it is achieved through the misà ¨-en-scà ¨ne and iconography by showing the bagpipes and them being played by a student. The Light of Knowledge is also a form of iconography and it represents the theme of the high-class school, where students are expected to achieve good results. The other form of iconography is the banners the four boys hold during the procession, the themes are printed on them: discipline, excellence, honour and tradition. The obvious theme in Dangerous Minds is one of disrespect as seen by the high concentration of graffiti on the buildings; this is seen through the misà ¨-en-scà ¨ne. A form of iconography which introduces a theme is the broken stop sign, this shows a complete disregard for rules as initially seen by the extremely raucous class Ms Johnson is appointed to teach. To conclude, both films use different techniques to try and convey their particular messages in the opening sequences. However, I believe that through intricate misà ¨-en-scà ¨ne, good use of iconography, camera angles, soundtrack, lighting and editing; Dead Poets Society stands out as the more convincing of the two films in conveying their message. The link between the number of carbon atoms in a fuel with the amount of energy it releases :: GCSE Chemistry Coursework Investigation
The link between the number of carbon atoms in a fuel with the amount of energy it releases Alcohols generally belong to compounds whose molecules are based on chains of carbon atoms. They usually contain one oxygen atom, which is joined to a carbon atom by a singular bond. This makes them different to other compounds. The oxygen atom is joined to the hydrogen atom as well as the carbon atom, which makes the oxygen a part of a hydroxyl group. These atoms are generally a part of a hydrocarbon chain. These alcohols can take away water from the body, in which a hydrocarbon chain has replaced a hydrogen atom. Alcohols have a general structure of CnH2n+1OH The aim of this investigation is to see the link between the numbers of carbon atom in a fuel with the amount of energy it releases. There would be a change in the amount of energy given off that is getting greater, the more carbon atoms in the fuel, the more there are more bonds to be broken and formed, thus producing more energy. ââ¬ËIn a chemical reaction, bonds in the reactant molecule are broken and new ones are formed. Atoms are rearranged. Energy has to be put in to break bonds, and energy is given out when bonds are formed.ââ¬â¢ When the total energy put in is greater than the energy put out, the substance cools down (it is endothermic). This is expressed as ÃŽâ⬠+ve (delta positive). If the total energy put in is less than the energy created, then the substance warms up (it is exothermic). This is expressed as ÃŽâ⬠-ve (delta negative). I will investigate eight different alcohols using an alcohol or spirit burner, to measure the energy change during burning them by measuring the change in temperature of some water held by a container. This container must have a value of specific heat capacity so I could calculate heat transferred to it as well. Probably the most conductive container available for use in the classroom is a calorimeter. As well as not wasting energy in the heating of the container, I could also try to stop heat from escaping the top and edges of the container by covering it with a fitting lid. I will try to prevent the wind from blowing the flames to a different direction so all the windows must be shut. HYPOTHESIS More energy is released as more bonds are formed, below is the list of approximate energy required to break and form all bond involved in burning alcohols TYPE OF BOND ENERGY REQUIRED TO BREAK THE BOND (j)

Tobacco :: Health, Diseases, Depression
Although there have been many studies regarding the negative health risks associated with tobacco, there have also been studies regarding its relation to obesity and depression (Leventhal et al., 2010). It discussed the relationships between tobacco use, obesity and depression by carrying out a population based survey of 41,654 adults (Leventhal et al., 2010). The data illustrated that tobacco use is very common in women with major depression and victims of obesity, in comparison with women who are non-smokers, but are still victims of major depression and obesity (Leventhal et al., 2010). The study will explain the effects on tobacco users. Depression is associated with the cause of obesity and vice-versa. Researchers have developed that the link between major depression and obesity is conditional upon a host of moderators which consists of gender, education, ethnicity, age, and genetics. The link between depression and obesity turned out to be common in females then males (Leventhal et al., 2010). Research by Leventhal et al. (2010) supports that major depression and obesity is associated with each other because depressed individuals engage in unhealthy eating behavior; an example of this would be binge eating or higher caloric intake (Leventhal et al., 2010). People who engage themselves in alternative behavior to cope with depressive symptoms may be less susceptible to the effects of depression and obesity. Leventhal et al. (2010) believes that tobacco is one such behavior because smoking is prevalent to people who are victims of depression. The relationship between major depression and obesity may be strong amongst nonsmokers because they are not using tobacco in order to modulate their depressive states. Leventhal et al. (2010) argued that concurrent tobacco use at any level of severity could diminish the major depression association. However, the alternative use of tobacco at any level of habitual degree could offset major obesity relations according to a substitute addiction framework (Leventhal et al., 2010). Within this experiment, certain groups were examined and they consisted of: two candidates of tobacco and included smoking status, and tobacco dependence that dealt with any tobacco used in the past year. They compared both results, and came up with a conclusion for their experiment. The participants for this experiment were respondents in the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions. Most of the participants were civilian, non-institutionalized, and residents of the U.S from ages 18 or older. African Americans and Hispanics were oversampled and each group accounted for approximately 20%.

Enabling Learning and Assessment
Two of the assessment activities that I use are Worksheets (or written questions) and photographic evidence. These assessment activities are the most commonly found within my level 1 group. Worksheets within my area are a very versatile way of collecting information from the student, they can contain short answer questions, multiple choice questions etc. Worksheets are extremely valid because they are usually created by the awarding body of that qualification or by the teachers who have read through what the learners need to achieve. Because it is a direct way of assessing, the learners will not ââ¬Å"go off taskâ⬠as the worksheets are designed to be short, sharp ways of assessing that require the learner to answer two or three questions about a particular criteria. Ideally, the learner should be assessed on different occasions, and by different people on each criteria, so that this assessment becomes more reliable. Once the learner has answered these questions to show their understanding, and have had the criteria explained to them, they would have passed that one element within their criteria, therefore making it even more sufficient, fair and reliable. Worksheets are very easy to differentiate depending on the level of learners/ course/ certain individuals. If you have someone in your class who is dyslexic then you can differentiate a worksheet into more picture based learning where possible and also if you have someone who excels in lessons you can differentiate the worksheets to enable more information from the learner. The fact that this can be done so easily makes it fair. A question of authenticity can be raised with worksheets because answers can be very easily duplicated within the classroom, however, it is up to the teacher to recognise that this is happening and stop it. In my experience of using worksheets I have found that it is a very accessible way of teaching because if you need to add a question onto a worksheet, you just simply add it through Microsoft word. The learners enjoy worksheets a lot more than essays or assignments because it only requires them to focus for short periods of time, which means that they are not, distracted halfway through and can put 100% effort into that worksheet. Another positive for a worksheet is that it usually explains on it what the learner needs to do so the learner could arry on completing other worksheets if the rest of the class need more explanation for example. This could, however, be a bad thing in a higher level course as they may not include the correct amount of information within their writing, but for my level 1 course, and the worksheets that I create, I make sure that I have explained what the criteria is that the student needs to complete. For me, worksheets are one of the best ways of assessing students as they have many positives. Photographic evidence is a way of capturing evidence through photographs as opposed to writing, this way of assessing is good because it shows that the student can do what the criteria is asking and the proof is the photograph, for example in one of my lessons a criteria is to take part in a team activity, using photographic evidence shows the student in the moment and participating. This therefore shows both validity and reliability because a photo can cover a range of criteria not just one. However, there can be issues with photos reliability as it could easily be posed for, and would not be a genuine indication of the wok that is being completed. This work is very authentic because it cannot be used by anyone other than the student in the photo. This method is also very fair as there is little writing to be done on the photographic evidence sheet, the writing that the student needs to complete is just for added information that the student would like to add. This makes this process much fairer to students that have dyslexia, or any other form of learning difficulty that might affect their written work. In my own practice of using photographic evidence I found that the students enjoy it a lot more because there is less work for them to do, however making sure that everyone has a photo of them completing the criteria can sometimes be a negative. The other bad point to photographic evidence is that you may find yourself having to complete the session again as people may have been away for that session and not got themselves a photo. This can hinder your scheme of work etc. But I still feel that this is one of the best ways of gathering evidence, especially for the lower level groups as they not have the literacy levels to complete what the higher level groups will. Purpose of assessment For this part of the assignment I am going to describe and analyse summative assessment. Summative assessment can be described as: ââ¬Å"â⬠¦what students tend to focus on. It is the assessment, usually on completion of a course or module, which says whether or not you have ââ¬Å"passedâ⬠. It isââ¬âor should beââ¬âundertaken with reference to all the objectives or outcomes of the course, and is usually fairly formal. (www. learningandteaching. info, 2010) Taking this approach makes the assessment very clear to the student, and not only confirms their overall mark, but also high lights what they have done well, and what they need to improve on; ââ¬Å"Summative assessment is the process of evaluating (and grading) the learning of students at a point in time. â⬠(www. qualityresearchinternational. com, 2010) Summative assessment also helps the assessor confirm that the student has an understanding of the topic, and has built upon their knowledge, as Wilson (2009) agrees; ââ¬Å"Summative assessment is usually associated with tests and exams. It aids the assessment of learning and is quite formal. In summative assessment styles, a learner progresses through their qualification until the time comes that learning is complete and they are tested on their knowledgeâ⬠. From my research I have found out that in most cases summative assessment is a test or exam at the end of a course to determine whether you have passed or failed what you have been studying. If you were to fail you would have to re-sit the exam or test. Students would normally get a period to revise for these tests to ensure that they pass. This is most definitely valid because it would be the awarding body that sets the exams. This form of summative assessment is also an extremely authentic and efficient way of assessing, as the room would be set up in exam conditions, with separate desks, no mobile phones or speaking so itââ¬â¢s guaranteed to be the individuals own work. There are some questions on the fairness of this though as everyone would get the same set of questions, written and presented in the same way without any kind of differentiation, so this may be unfair to those, for example, that struggle with reading, and is therefore putting that student at a disadvantage. However, those with learning difficulties who would have the greatest struggle with this form of assessment, often have Exam Access Arrangements, granting them with special permissions such as extra time, rest breaks, or a scribe. Also with regards to preparing, some students may have a computer at home that may help them to gain a greater advantage than those without this technology. Some people from other cultures may have some other things that are more important to them at home, for example, praying. Some of these people may also not speak English and that disadvantages them straight away. ââ¬Å"Assessment is a socially embedded activity which can only be understood by taking account of the cultural, economic and political contexts within which it operatesâ⬠(Stobart, 2005) Within my area however, it is not a pass or fail exam which is the summative assessment. The summative assessment in my area is completed in a much smaller scale throughout the year in the form of portfolio evidence. The course that I teach is a yearlong course for level 1 students wanting to be in the public services (police, royal marines etc). The entire course consists of 7 units which range from map reading to team building and physical fitness. The evidence that we use in these portfolios is also varied including witness statements, photographic evidence and short answer questions on worksheets. Due to the varied methods of evidence collection it is difficult to individualise each one for validity and reliability etc. But generally because there is that varied style the students always look forward to the theory side of the sessions. As I make the worksheets for this course, I know that they are reliable, valid, fair and current because I have differentiated almost all of them for higher level learners and lower level. I know what the awarding body is looking for in terms of work so have structured the worksheets around that. My only concern for this type of assessment is authenticity, as it would be easy to replicate a friendââ¬â¢s answer without understanding it yourself. We summative assess like this because it is an NCFE qualification that is determined and assessed on a completed portfolio of evidence rather than an exam at the end of the year. This is useful for us as teachers, and a less stressful experience for our learners, because if a learner does not understand then we can explain it in different ways until they do, so they keep getting to try and try again, rather than try once and theyââ¬â¢ve passed or failed. This also helps us target their areas of concern, and we can therefore plan accordingly. Reflection The biggest single source of feedback is from the learner themselves: from their internalised judgementsâ⬠(www. psy-gla. ac. uk, 2010) The above comment is very true in the case of one of my students, he was his biggest critic, he was home schooled and really didnââ¬â¢t like the idea of education as a whole never mind being told what to do, this same student also has been diagnosed with aspergers and ADHD. The first day he came into college he was on extension studies and I was his support worker at the time. Trying to get him to do any work was near to impossible. He had a real problem with authority and lacked the confidence to ask for help from either myself or the teacher. During my time with this student I soon realised that he would use conversation as a way of distracting himself from learning. I adopted a strategy that allowed him to talk and get his work done at the same time, this was after I had a 1:1 with him and discussed to him that he was only making his college life difficult for himself and he would get much more done if he listened to the staff and then, once his work is complete, he can talk to me about other things. I then moved to the sports and public services department, to find that this particular student had in filled to one of my lessons that I would be teaching. Without a support worker I thought that this student would struggle with the content within the class as he wasnââ¬â¢t used to working without a supportive voice, giving him feedback where it counted. I kept him behind the first session and asked how I could improve to help his learning, and he gave me some ideas which I used the next session, such as short hands on activities to break up the sessions, and his general behaviour and attitude flourished. I also had a system in place that we set up together, if he was struggling with a piece of work he would put his pen down and fold his arms, which gave me the signal to come over and assist him. A year after that, this student enrolled on the course that he was infilling last year (where he is now). And with regular tutorials and setting up of SMART targets for him, for example ââ¬Å"show up to lessons with the correct equipment on time and if you are going to be late phone up in advance and let us knowâ⬠, he is one of the high achievers in the class and will be moving on next year to a level 2 course. So had it not been for feedback with this individual I donââ¬â¢t feel that he would have made it within the education system but due to good sources of feedback around the college he is now achieving a lot higher than he would have hoped and that I would have expected when he first came to college. (ecologyofeducation. net) Feedback has helped me develop as a teacher in many ways, the first micro each of the PTLLS course gave me great confidence and enthusiasm towards being a teacher as my general peer and tutor feedback was extremely positive and not much went wrong. I have also had some constructive feedback throughout my observations from both Barbara Roche, Rob Gray and the students in my class that have given me some great ideas for the future, such as keeping motivation high by switching tasks quickly so that people do not find the lesson boring. Keeping tasks into bite size pieces to not confuse the learner. I have received feedback from my manager on my lessons after an observation and the feedback was to be more academic within the classroom and try to understand the difference between being too friendly towards students and not achieving the respect that a teacher needs. Due to this feedback I made sure that I was still friendly towards the students but not too friendly and within a few weeks I had the respect and rapport that I expected. Feedback has helped me reflect more as itââ¬â¢s a great tool to use, I give positive feedback to myself and, as long as Iââ¬â¢m honest, constructive feedback too. As seen above reflection enters Kolbs feedback cycle just after the concrete experience and just before the abstract conceptualisation, where one would discover what learning actually took place. Overall, without feedback there would be no active learning, students wouldnââ¬â¢t know how well they had done, teachers wouldnââ¬â¢t know if they are doing their job correctly. You understand and gain confidence or know where to improve because of the feedback you get, whether this is in a one to one basis with a manager or work colleague, or in a classroom full of students.

Kleenex claims ââ¬Å"when we eat from the Industrial food system, we are eating 011 and spewing greenhouse gases. â⬠Explain what he means by this. What is the alternative? It takes ten calories of fossil energy to produce a single calorie of modern supermarket food, and when we try to address one problem, the other gets worse which is why starvation is on the rise on the rise that the United States now uses a huge chunk of its topsoil to grow gasoline, and not food.We need to produce lots of food on relatively small farms with little or nothing in the way of synthetic fertilizer or chemicals. 2. How did Britain increase food production during World War II by 91%? Why is this story included in the chapter? What evidence does he present that such a change could happen in American suburbs? Pig clubs and Small gardens or allotments sprung up throughout the country to support themselves. To show that our farmers need better time and space management to Improve their growth rate and spending.Small farms are capable of getting far more productive with each passing season, because they can take advantage of en information, new science, new technologies. 3. Compare modern mechanized monoculture to smaller scale polluter. Explain why polluter will be more sustainable as the climate continues to change. Monoculture is mainly used in industrialized agriculture with many inputs of fossil fuels and chemicals to produce large amounts of a single crop.Polluter is often locally based, and may be found in a subsistence agriculture reactive that uses human and animal energy to produce smaller amounts of many different crops. Polluter and working with nature can provide many and more sustainable solutions to our current challenges, and that In diversifying the food economy we will be much more resilient to future shocks. In doing so we can also reduce our collective agricultural carbon footprint. 4. Imagine yourself Ralston some of your own food at your own or in your neigh borhood. Besides food, what two benefits might you also get?If you participated in a community garden with your neighbors, what two additional benefits might everyone experience? Beautiful scenery, good exercise from working in the garden, satisfaction of growing your own food. The fellowship and mentoring opportunities to learn from. 5. How would a CASE (Community Supported Energy) system differ from our current system of electricity production and why might it be less vulnerable? CASE is a way of fostering more local control of essential energy supplies. It puts energy decisions back into the communities hands. Our electricity production is a owned electric company, but companies Like TACO are Investor companies. 6. Consider Muckiness's explanation of how Middlebury and Burlington provide their power locally. What local sources of energy would you recommend for Wasted and Houston? Besides creating less pollution, how might your plan increase our sustainability? Solar power is alway s a technique because wind is always available. They could use natural gas burning power plants other than coal power plants because the gas burning produces a lot less pollution.Electricity companies are starting to use the Carbon Catcher. The clean coal (Carbon Catcher) captures the carbon pollution (chemically) and then they store the carbon that they collect. This process is called sequestered. 7. What do the internet and a farmer's market have in common, and why will the internet be important as we continue to deal with climate change? The way that a farmers market is distributed food production or a solar panel is distributed power, but because of the connecting power of the Web. It added up to more than the sum of its parts.

Should Obese People Have Higher Premiums
Guoyi Chen Should Obese People Have Higher Premiums The Obesity epidemic affects millions people of the United States every day. According to the National Institutes of Health, ââ¬Å"obesityâ⬠refers to any individual with a BMI of more than 30 and BMI is simply a calculation that assesses weight relative to height (NIH). In the past decades, the number of obese Americans has increased dramatically. Based on the data from Nation Health and Examination Survey, about one-third of U. S. adults (33. %) are obese and approximately 17% (or 12. 5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are obese (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). It is well documented that people who are obese are more likely to have so-called ââ¬Å"obese-relatedâ⬠health problems such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the government has spent about 122 billion dollars annually to cure people who have obese related health issues and this number is still increasing.Because obesity costs so much annually, some people suggest that people who are obese should pay higher insurance rates because they place a heavy burden on the government and use more health care resources than non-obese people. On the other hand, others hold the opinion that it is unfair for people who are obese and it is kind of discrimination if they need to pay higher insurance rates than non-obese people. The important question that worth to notice here is that what causes obesity? Some people suggest that obesity is more about ââ¬Å"natureâ⬠. It has something to do with genes because obese people would transfer their ââ¬Å"obese geneâ⬠to their offspring. Other people believe that it more about ââ¬Å"nurtureâ⬠because an unhealthy life style could leads to obesity. However, according to NIH, ââ¬Å"obesity is mainly caused by consuming more calories than the body needs ââ¬â most commonly by eating a diet high in fat and calories, living a sedentary lifestyle, or both. â⬠(NIH).That being said, most people who are obese that way are because they do not care about their health so much and prefer an unhealthy lifestyle, therefore, those people should pay higher insurance rates because they choose to behave in ways that pose risks to their health. To begin with, people who are obese should pay higher insurance rate because they choose to ruin their health by choosing unhealthy food rather than healthy food. The choices on food have a close connection with peopleââ¬â¢s health problems. Based on the definition that was given by NIH, obesity is caused by eating a diet high in fat and calories. That is to say, peopleââ¬â¢s choice on food affects this problem significantly. Nowadays, people have lots of choices on food. There are always many health options available to people besides unhealthy food. However, some people would like to choose food that contains high calories rather than fres h vegetables, fruit etc. They are more likely to eat food such as cheeseburgers, pizza, soft drinks and fries. It seems like these kinds of food are relative inexpensive, faster to get and even more delicious in some degree. But from a different point of view, these kinds of food contain many calories, which could causes obesity problems later on. One possible reason that people choose eat those unhealthy food might because they think fresh vegetables, fruit and even fresh proteins are expensive for them so they have to eat things like fast food instead since they do not have high incomes even if they want to buy those healthy food. But a good question that worth to think about carefully here is that ââ¬Å"Are these ââ¬Å"healthyâ⬠food options really more expensive than ââ¬Å"unhealthyâ⬠food? â⬠Take ââ¬Å"fast-foodâ⬠as an example.According to Mark Bittman, the author of the article ââ¬Å"Is Junk Food Really Cheaperâ⬠, which published in New York Time s, a typical order for a family of four is two Big Macs, a cheeseburger, six chicken McNuggets, two medium and two small fries, and two medium and two small sodas, which cost about 28 dollars. But the home-cooked meal of chicken, salad, potatoes and milk cost on average about 13. 78 dollars and a homemade meal of pinto beans and rice is even cheaper at $9. 26. However, the calories that people get from having fast food is definitely much higher than having healthy goods. With the time goes along, there is a big chance that peopleââ¬â¢s eating habit will be changed into unhealthy way and finally leads to obesity and even results in obese related problems. That is to say, eating health does not mean eating expensive. It is about what you choose to eat. Some people might argue that they want to cook at home but the grocery stores are far away from them and some of them are even do not know how to cook. However, according to research conducted by Department of Agriculture, 93 percent of those with limited access to supermarkets do have access to vehicles. That being said, even if taking the long route to putting food on the table may not be easy, but for most Americans it remains a choice. The idea is that if you can drive to McDonaldââ¬â¢s you can drive to Safeway as well. Cook a health meal is not a complicate job. There are lots of books on the cashier that teach people how to cook the health food. Why donââ¬â¢t you take the responsibility to learn how to prepare a health meal and protect your family or yourself from obesity related health issues? Beside, it is understandable that people live in fast pace society now and barely have time to prepare health meals. But why don't you spend less time watching TV everyday? Your time is there. By spending less time watching TV, you could not only prepared health food but also burned extra calories while preparing the food, which is also helpful. That being said, money, time and cook skills might not the excuses for people who choose to eat unhealthy food and ruin their healthy this way. Choosing what kinds food to eat is totally a personal choice, of people have the unhealthy eating style they have, they are more likely to become obese and get some obese related problems such as diabetes. As we discussed above, government spent huge amount of money to cure those people. In another words, people who care about their health and choose a health eating habit pay tax dollars to government every years just can get less benefits than what they should have because there is a part of their tax dollars go to cure those people who ruin their health by choosing unhealthy life style. In short, obese people should pay higher insurance rates for themselves than non-obese people because the diseases they get is caused by their obesity and their obesity caused by the unhealthy eating habit they choose.Another reason why obese people should pay higher insurance rates is because they barely take some actions such as, do more exercising to control their weight. Doing some exercises could help them stay away from obese related health problems and then save huge amount of money every year. We should take two different situations into consideration. One is that people who are obese but already taking some exercises to lose some weight. Those groups of obese people might already understand that obesity could results in many health diseases and would bring negative externality to society. However, another group is the people who are obese but still do not want to take actions to keep them away from health diseases. Those groups of people are the people who need to pay higher insurance because they do not care about their health in the beginning and do not even care if they will bring negative impact on society. Moreover, those people perhaps think that government will pay expensive expenses for them when they get sick because they have health insurance like anyone else do.That is to say, it en courages those people to not take actions to help themselves away from obese related health problems if the insurance rates stay the same for anybody. Some people might say that it is kind of discrimination that requires people who are obese to pay higher insurance rates than non-obese people. It seems reasonable in some degree. Why should insurance rates depend on peopleââ¬â¢s appearance? However, in order to look at this problem fairly, let's consider two important questions. The first question is ââ¬Å"do obese people have a choice between being fat and not fat? â⬠This is a very important question to think about before deciding whether obese people should pay higher insurance rates or not. If being obese is more about ââ¬Å"natureâ⬠thing that has something to do with ââ¬Å"genesâ⬠and people who are obese do not have controls on that, then, they should not pay higher insurance than non-obese and if they are required to do so, it is definitely a discriminatio n and it would just end up punishing people who are already punished by their health.According to ObesityinAmerica. org, obesity is not always caused by simple behavioral issues, it has something to do with genes. For example, genetic determinations such as the way a body expends energy, hormones that affect the way calories are processed, and other organ systems in the body can all affect appetite. These groups of people do not have control on how they will be born, but they do have controls on whether they want to take initiative to have a healthy eating habits and life styles, which could help them away from obesity related problems. The idea is that as long as they realized the potential health issues they might have and helping themselves away from these dangers, they should not be required to pay higher health insurance rates since their behaviors could ease heavy economic burden on government. However, other type of people, who have choice on being obese or not, should pay hig her health insurance rates if they ââ¬Å"chooseâ⬠to be obese by having unhealthy eating habits and sedentary lifestyle because they choose to place a negative externality to society, then, we should ask that for those people who ââ¬Å"chooseâ⬠to be obese, do they impose an cost on other people?Unfortunately, the answer would be yes. Those people believe they have the right to choose their own lifestyle even though it is bad for their health, but what they didn't noticed is that their ââ¬Å"rightâ⬠would impose an cost on people who have a health lifestyle. It is common sense that obesity can cause many diseases. Author Yves Engler, who is a Canadian writer and political activist, mentions in his article ââ¬Å"Obesity: Much of the Responsibility Lies with Corporationsâ⬠that ââ¬Å"Researchers claim there are links between obesity and more than 30 medical conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, cancers and possibly Alzheimerââ¬â¢sâ⠬ .In other words, obesity is not just about how you look like physically, it actually causes many fatal diseases, which cost much to cure. Yves Engler points out in the same article that ââ¬Å"The U. S. National Institute of Health estimates that the annual costs of treating obesity-related conditions are at least $120 billionâ⬠, that is to say, larger proportions of tax dollars were used to treat people who are ruining their own healthy by choosing a bad healthy life style. Then, why should people who care about their health and choose health life style paid the money for those group of people who claims that they have their own ââ¬Å"rightâ⬠to choose what they want. It does not make sense that someone who doesn't care about their health by eating excessive amounts of unhealthy food and spending few time exercising pays the same insurance premium of a person who makes it a priority to keep their health in the best possible shape they can. In some degree, requires obes e people pay higher health insurance is just like require dangerous driver pay higher car insurance rates. The driver could have options to drive safely, but he/she choose drive dangerously instead and because of his/her dangerous driving, it would put others life and properties in a risky place. So, is it kind of discrimination if car insurance companies charge higher rates to those dangerous drivers than drivers who drive safely? It is probably not. The idea the require obese people tp pay higher insurance rates is not because government want to take advantages from obese people, it is because it is a good way to encourage obese people control their life style. That being said, requiring people who obese pay higher insurance rates is not discrimination. It is a fair way that redistributes health care expenses and encourages them to pay attention to their health. All in all, those people who realized they are obese but do not want to take initiative do to control their weight should pay higher insurance because their own ââ¬Å"choiceâ⬠brings a negative externality on society. Because of their unhealthy ifestyle, they would more likely to get obese related health problem than non-obese people and then demand more health care resource than non-obese people, they should responsible for the cost that resulted by their own choices. Abortion Should Be Legal
Abortion is the deliberate ending of a pregnancy by removing the fetus from the mother's uterus and should only be carried out by trained medical personnel. Abortion was introduced at a very early age in society. I believe people should choose their own path and their own future, right down to abortions. I believe in choice. Pro-choice. People's lives and rights should not be interfered by the opinion of another. There are certain rights given to a person which cannot be removed or changed. This gives the choice-maker the right to live with his/her own decision without the guilt or disturbance of a third party. Live your own lives. A body belongs to one soul, giving one soul the rules and rights over it. People tend to forget that. As in an economy, when something is in demand, legal or not, people will sell and buy it. But what about those people who feel guilt over something that shouldn't pressure them? May it be abortion or not. Most people would like to live under the choices the y make without the world pushing them over or religions battering them with stones. With the evolving moral standards of society, abortions are becoming more and more justified. Abortions, the practice of removing a fertilized egg from a mother has become a controversial issue in American society, but should be generally supported because there are circumstances where the mother to be is unable to sustain a pregnancy safely. Young low income women and or girls who become mothers have grim prospects for the future and in the case of rape or incest, forcing a woman made pregnant by this violent act would cause further psychological harm to the victim. In, ââ¬Å"The Cost of Choiceâ⬠, the National Abortion Federation (NAF) and Planned Parenthood, among other pro-abortion advocacy groups and organizations, have formulated and published standards and guidelines for affiliated clinics and physicians. In fact, Planned Parenthood clinics, with few exceptions, must adhere to the operation al standards and protocols mandated by the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. State legislatures have obtained copies of these standards and protocols and have used them to formulate minimum health and safety standards for abortion care. Encounter Books, 2004. p 128. ) Those who are against legalizing abortion/pro-life believe that a fetus is a person and should be granted life just as every other living being on this earth. Imagine a mother and child falling into dangerous river rapids and a family member or bystander must decide who to save. It's a terrible decision that must be made. Regardless of the decision, one life will be lost and one saved. This situation differs so fundamentally from abortion on demand, which is to kill the unborn baby for convenience, as opposed to choosing which life will be saved.Pro-life activist / believers think that abortion is murder, and that life begins at conception. ââ¬Å"In biology and in medicine, it is an accepted fact that the life of any individual organism reproducing by sexual reproduction begins at conception (fertilization). â⬠ââ¬Å"By all the criteria of modern molecular biology, life is present from the moment of conception. â⬠ââ¬Å"Human life begins at the time of conception. â⬠ââ¬Å"Human life begins when after the ovum is fertilized the new combined cell mass begins to divide. ââ¬Å"The beginning of a single human life is from a biological point of view a simple and straightforward matter ââ¬â the beginning is conception. â⬠(Boonin, 2002, p. 21) Pro-choice believer think that Adoption is a viable alternative to abortion and accomplishes the same result, however statistics show that most women who carry a child do not give their child up for adoption. They might also believe that, an abortion can result in medical complications later in life; the risk of ectopic pregnancies double.Abortion for medical reasons where the mother's life is in jeopardy that should be left to the discretion of the mother, family, and doctor. It's true, the mother and the unborn baby are still two separate individuals/entities, but under these difficult circumstances, it's truly a personal decision for those directly involved. Abortion in cases of rape and/or incest should be treated the same as abortion for medical reasons. It should be up to the victim of the rape or incest what she wants to do in this rare and terrible situation. Some countries now with moderately restrictive laws permit abortions to protect a women's health, to end pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, to avoid genetic or other defects, or in response to social problems such as unmarried status or low income. Rape one of the top reasons why I believe that a woman should be able to have an abortion. Rape is the act of sexual intercourse with a woman without her consent or with a minor. Having a child resulting from the mother being rape causes many metal problems for the mother as the birth of the child could be a remembrance of what happen.Incest is sexual intercourse between people who are of blood relations this is one of the reasons why abortion should be legal. It is believed that 50% of all incest cases happen to children fewer than 17 years of age. It has also been stated that children who are conceived by incest are more likely to the possibly leading to mental retardation Birth defects are any abnormalities in the structure or function of the fetus. About twenty percent or more of malformed fetuses are aborted; the rest results in a newborn baby with a birth defect. Each type of birth defect is rare . All live births can cause increased percent of infant deaths in the period immediately after birth. Low income is when people have little or no money coming into the home. To care for a child is very expensive you need to buy pampers, milk, formula's, clothes, powder, cream, soap, towels, cribs and if u are working u need to pay for ah baby sitter. It takes an average o f $15000 a year to care of a child. There are now 1. 3 million surgical abortions per year in the United States. 0 The Alan Guttmacher Institute (the research arm of Planned Parenthood) reports that women have abortions for two primary reasons: lack of financial resources and lack of emotional support. .(Encounter Books, 2004. p 198. ) One needs to take into consideration the developmental stages of the fetal life span. Most abortions occur soon after the confirmation of pregnancy, (usually prior to 12 weeks gestation. ) The first twelve weeks is known as the first trimester or the embryonic phase. At this time the fetus is about 3-3. inches long having a weight of 15-20 grams. The neurological system is primitive at best, demonstrating only vague swimming motions. In the late 1880ââ¬â¢s, The American Medical Association led the fight to criminalize all abortions. The campaign was a total success, with every state outlawing abortion. However, criminal prohibition did not stop wom en from obtaining illegal abortions, which sometimes resulted in severe medical problems. (Abortion, 2002, para. 8) I think this would cause more harm than good to make abortion illegal.Every woman should have the right to make that decision without the government getting involved. I do not recommend abortion as a birth-control method of choice. I merely state that it is a fact the most important single method of birth-control in the world today, and to cut down on population growth we should make abortion easy and safe while we continue to develop other and more ââ¬Å"satisfactoryâ⬠methods of family limitation. In addition to the 5 million women in the U. S. without access to birth-control for whom abortion would seem a mater of right when they want t, there are the uncounted thousands who after conception suffer some diseases of discover some defect which makes the birth of a live healthy baby unlikely, and the many, too, whose contraceptive methods occasionally do not work . Today abortion under modern hospital conditions is safer than childbirth. Instead of making abortion more difficult and dangerous for women, lawmakers should promote policies that reduce the need for abortion. Almost 50 percent of all pregnancies in this country are unintended, including over 30 percent within marriage. And over half of all unintended pregnancies end in abortion. In the Roe vs. Wade the Supreme Court ruled that a woman was allowed by the Constitution's 14th Amendment to receive an abortion before the first trimester. It now appeared that the pro-choice advocates had won the political tug-o-war at last. However, violence continues between the two groups as the animosity and resentment has grown to new heights. The most important part of reproductive rights is the principle that a woman has the right to decide whether and when to have a child.Religious beliefs, politics, incident of pregnancy, support, economy, long term consequences, such as regrets and depression, being able to take responsibility, and health issues are major factors that must be taken in consideration before resulting to abortion. For any pregnant woman, making a decision to abort her child is painful and ruthless, but under certain situation such as rape, young age and financial reasons, a woman should have the right to choose to terminate her pregnancy if she chooses to do so by aborting her unborn child.
